Play a contraction matching game to enhance grammar and spelling skills in the classroom.
Contraction Matching Game for Classroom Fun!
Writing and grammar practice don’t have to be boring. It can be exciting, loud, and highly engaging. Our Contractions SLAP IT! Card game will have your learners engaged in a friendly competition to match contractions with their corresponding complete versions.
Students spread the SLAP cards out on the table or floor face-up to play. The MATCH cards are then placed to the side face down. Students draw a Match Card, read it aloud, and race to slap the matching contraction SLAP! Card.
It’s a race against time and a true battle of the brains!
Students will show their ability to read, spell, and identify contractions through this activity.

In addition to individual student work time, use this Contractions game to enhance learning through guided writing groups or writer’s workshop stations.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
Help struggling students understand the concepts by providing access to previous assignments, as well as posters and anchor charts for students to recall past lessons.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
Challenge your fast finishers to continue their learning by using the cards to write sentences or create posters for classroom display.
🧑🏫 Group Lesson (or Other Activity)
🛴 Scoot Activity
Place the cards around the room in numerical order and give each student a recording sheet. Assign students or pairs to a starting point card. Give students time to review the card and record their answers in the corresponding space on their paper. Students will rotate to the next card when you say, “SCOOT!” Continue in this manner until students return to their starting point.
