Coordinate Plane Games to Engage Your Students

Looking for some coordinate plane games that are educational AND fun? This resource definitely fits the bill and is ready in minutes. In our “Roll and Graph” game, students will practice plotting points and finding the distance between them, covering multiple curriculum standards.

This resource includes:

  • Six 4-quadrant Roll and Graph game boards
  • Four Q1 Roll and Graph game boards

This game also promotes critical thinking as students choose where to put the numbers they roll for a maximum score. “Roll and Graph” works well as a small group, fast finisher, indoor recess or center activity.

How to Play “Roll and Graph”

This coordinate plane game was created with partners in mind, but can be played with a small group as well. It could also theoretically be played as a class — some students will have the same game boards but they will likely put the numbers rolled in different spots so the outcomes will all be different.

Instructions:

  1. Give each group or pair one die and each student a different numbered game board.
  2. A die is rolled, and players decide which of the 12 coordinate blanks to fill with the rolled number.
  3. Students plot the point they have just created.
  4. Play continues until all points are created and plotted.
  5. Students find the distance between each plotted point.
  6. Students add all the distances for a total distance.
  7. The player with the highest total distance wins!

We suggest you print the game boards on cardstock and laminate them so they can be used again and again with dry erase markers.
