How to Introduce the Coordinate Plane
Students will need an understanding of basic coordinate plane concepts before being able to complete these pictures. Here is a list of terms and concepts you’ll want to ensure students know:
- Coordinate Plane: A two-dimensional plane formed by the intersection of two perpendicular number lines.
- Axes: The two number lines that intersect on the coordinate plane at a point called the origin. The x-axis is horizontal, and the y-axis is vertical.
- Origin: The point at which the x and y axes intersect. Its coordinates are (0,0).
- Quadrants: The four sections of the coordinate plane created by the axes. They are numbered counter-clockwise, beginning at the top right.
- Ordered Pairs: Two numbers that together indicate a point’s location via the x and y axes on the coordinate plane.
- Plot: To place an ordered pair on the coordinate plane.
