Counting Coins – Interactive Activities

Help your students with their money skills by determining which coins are needed to create a given amount. This resource includes sixteen slides with four different activities.

To use this resource, simply assign it in Google Classroom. Once students have opened the file in edit mode, they will complete the four different activities. Students will drag and drop coins or colored circles to complete each activity.

Through this activity, students will choose the correct coins needed to make a given amount, show how to make the same amount two different ways, and determine the missing coin for an amount under $1.00.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your math lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided math groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners and ELL/ESL students, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Help students who need to understand the concepts by focusing on one or two activities rather than all of them. Students may also benefit from one-to-one assistance or partner work with this activity. Additionally, provide access to previous assignments, as well as posters and anchor charts for students to recall past lessons.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

Challenge your fast finishers to create word problems to match different money amounts from the activities. Students can create problems that involve adding or subtracting within $1.00.

🧑‍🏫 Group Learning

Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.
