50 CVC Words at Your Fingertips!
This list of 50 CVC words has been compiled to assist you in implementing your phonics program in your classroom. The ability to decode and encode words consisting of a beginning consonant sound, a middle short vowel sound and an ending consonant sound (otherwise known as CVC words) opens many doors for our students. They can begin reading basic decodable texts and can start constructing simple sentences. These are the first steps on the journey to becoming competent readers and writers!
Print-and-Go CVC Words for Kindergarten Skill Assessment
This list of CVC words can be used in numerous ways to support the diverse needs of your learners during your literacy sessions. Here are some of our suggestions:
Whole-class instruction
Project the word list on your interactive whiteboard. As a class, practice segmenting and blending the three phonemes in each CVC word on the list. You might also like to manipulate the phonemes in each word to create word chains, e.g., “What word do we make if we swap the “c” in “cat” with an “s”? How can we swap out the “t” to make a new word?”
Individual practice
Send the lists home so your students can revise decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) the CVC words on the list. Be sure to include only words containing letter-sound correspondences you have already addressed in class.
Formative assessment
Use the word list as a progress monitoring tool to keep track of your student’s phonemic awareness and identify the letter-sound correspondences that require further review.
