Financial Literacy for Kids
Welcome to Dan’s Digital World, your one-stop destination for all your electronic needs! Whether you’re looking for top-of-the-line televisions, cutting-edge digital cameras, sleek laptops, versatile tablets or immersive home entertainment products, Dan is happy to make you a deal! But there’s more to Dan’s than just shopping; it’s also a gateway to invaluable real-world learning experiences in financial literacy.
Teaching our students financial literacy at an early age sets a solid foundation for financial responsibility. It instills habits of mindful spending, saving and investing that can last a lifetime.
This authentic, real-world maths activity has been designed to immerse your students in the world of discounts, sales prices and budgets. Students are required to use the store catalog for Dan’s Digital World to explore four different purchasing scenarios. Through solving the problems in these scenarios, students will demonstrate their ability to:
- Calculate discounts
- Calculate sale price
- Calculate total cost of multiple purchases
- Calculate the cost of warranties
- Purchase items within a budget
- Compare prices with competitors
This worksheet pack downloads as a printable PDF or an editable Google Slides file. Answers are included in both download options.
Why Is Financial Literacy Important?
In today’s fast-paced world, financial literacy is an essential skill, especially for upper elementary students. Here are some of the ways this resource supports this valuable part of the math curriculum:
- Real-World Relevance – Although Dan’s Digital World is not a real store, it replicates the many digital stores that upper-primary students are familiar with. This authenticity makes the link between mathematics and real life more tangible.
- Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving – Navigating through Dan’s catalog challenges students to think critically and solve real-world problems. Through this process, they’re honing essential skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
- Financial Calculation Skills – By completing this activity, students are calculating total costs, applying discounts and making purchases within a budget. These are the same skills they’ll need when managing their finances in the future.
