Comparing Decimals Game

Are your students in need of additional practice with comparing decimals? If you are looking for an activity to spark a little competitiveness between your students but still reach those important 5th-grade math standards, you have come to the right place!

“Decimal War” is an educational board game that combines the skills of comparing decimals with numbers written in standard form, word form and Base 10 blocks. If your students need a refresher on how to represent decimals with Base 10 blocks, remind them that a “flat” represents one whole, a “rod” is used to show tenths and a “unit cube” is used to show hundredths.

The game includes 36 game cards, each featuring a decimal written one of three ways. Much like the traditional card game, players flip over cards and compare the decimals to determine who gets to roll the die. Students will move along the game board while practicing their decimal comparison skills. The first player to reach the finish line wins!

Through this activity, students will show they can compare decimals to the thousandths when written with numerals, in word form or with Base 10 blocks.

Differentiate While Comparing and Ordering Decimals

Here are a few tricks for our teacher team to make sure that all your students can comfortably engage with this decimals board game:

  • Do you have a few students who could use some additional scaffolding while playing this decimals game? Why not provide them with a copy of our  Comparing and Ordering Decimals Poster Set as a reminder of different ways to compare decimal numbers.
  • Looking to add an extra challenge for your high-flying mathematicians? For each turn, have students name an additional decimal that would fall between the two being compared.
