Help children decompose 3-digit numbers by identifying the place value of hundreds, tens, and ones with this matching activity.
Decomposing Numbers Using Place Value
Decomposing numbers into place value means breaking down a number into its constituent parts based on its place value in the number system. Understanding this allows children. to understand the contribution of each digit to the overall value of the number.
Print, cut out, and laminate a class set of the decomposing cards and store them in a zip-lock bag. Students, individually or in small groups, connect the number cards with the addition and equal sign cards to create a number sentence.
How to Use This Place Value Activity
Once you’ve got this resource, prepare – it’s a great activity to include in your math stations. First, provide your students with a number to decompose – then in pairs, they can use the number cards, addition cards, and equal cards to create the expanded version of the number card you provided. Have them then write this in their math books and move on to the next number.
