What is Deforestation? The Kids’ Version

Deforestation is the process of cutting down or clearing large areas of forested land. This activity can have a range of negative effects on the environment, wildlife, and people, including

  • Forests are home to a diverse range of plants and animals. When forests are cleared, these creatures lose their homes and may struggle to survive.
  •  Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen through photosynthesis. This process is disrupted when forests are cut down, leading to increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This contributes to climate change.
  • Trees help to hold soil in place and prevent erosion. When forests are cleared, the soil can become loose and wash away during heavy rains, causing problems for farmers and damaging ecosystems.

It’s important to remember that deforestation is a complex issue with many causes and impacts. By providing your students with high-quality science materials in engaging formats, you can help transform them into eco-aware students with the goal of making our planet a better place.
