Looking for some supplementary lesson ideas to support your teaching of procedural writing? Here are some suggestions from our teacher team that you may not have considered:

  • Art and Craft Projects – As a brain break or art and craft activity, have students make a paper plane, origami figure or simple artwork. Then, have students write a simple procedure that explains how to replicate their creation.
  • Cooking Activities – Incorporate simple cooking activities into your procedural writing lessons. Students could create a simple dish or snack, then write up the recipe.
  • Charades – Play a class game of “Charades” using Teach Starter’s Procedure Text Topic Cards. Have students act out each step while the rest of the class tries to get the procedure being performed.
