Disguise a Turkey Template for Home and School

Looking for a fun Thanksgiving writing prompt for your students this fall? Have your students design a disguise for Tom the turkey with this fun worksheet, then write about it. With this holiday printable, students get a simple outline of a turkey that’s ready to be disguised with collage materials, simple coloring or even a complete makeover — the only limit is your students’ ideas.

Students will have to use their imagination by creating a disguise and an escape plan to save Tom the turkey! He could be a monster, a rockstar, or even transform into a peacock! No one eats peacocks, right?

Once their turkey disguise is done, you can extend this activity by having your students write a narrative text that includes Tom, his disguise and his escape plan.

What Is Disguise a Turkey?

Saving the turkey at Thanksgiving is an American tradition – even the president gets in the mix with an official pardon of one particular bird. This “disguise” activity challenges our students to think outside the box to work on their disguises while also serving as a fun Thanksgiving-themed activity that brings students’ focus back to the classroom … even when their minds are wrapped up in thoughts of mashed potatoes and visiting relatives!

Disguise a Turkey Activity Ideas From Our Teacher Team

Looking for some ideas to make the most of this teaching resource this school year? Here are some tips from our teacher team!

  • Engage your whole class in a brainstorming session to generate ideas for disguising their turkeys. Challenge students to think outside the box and come up with unique and imaginative concepts.
  • Hand out craft supplies, and allow students to sketch their ideas on a separate piece of paper or create a simple plan for their turkey’s disguise before tackling their turkey cutout sheet.
  • Once your flock of turkeys are all dressed up, bring them together for an amazing Thanksgiving bulletin board!
  • Looking to integrate this into your math lessons? Have students measure and record the dimensions of their turkey’s disguise. They can compare the sizes of various components or calculate the total area covered by Tom the turkey’s new disguise.

This resource makes a great writing center activity in the classroom leading up to Thanksgiving, but it also makes a great family project to make that school-to-home connection.
