How to Find Equivalent Fractions
Numerous strategies can be utilized to find equivalent fractions. Often, students are instructed to multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number to generate one or more fractions equivalent to the original. This strategy works; however, adding visual and hands-on elements can aid in a deeper understanding of this concept.
In this activity, students will not only identify a model of the fraction called out but also draw on the card and divide the model into more equal parts to generate an equivalent fraction. As students play this game, they will immediately have visual proof that the fraction called and their fraction are equivalent, solidifying their understanding.
Small Group Instructions:
- Choose which visual model you would like to use and print one card per student.
- Call out a fraction from the calling cards.
- Students find and mark the fraction on their BINGO card and draw lines on their model to show an equivalent fraction.
- Students write the equivalent fraction next to their model.
- Four in a row wins.
After multiple rounds of this engaging activity, your students will be able to generate equivalent fractions in a snap!
