Match word problems, equations, and visual models with this match-up activity.

Match Equations with an Unknown Quantity with Models and Word Problems

How do your students represent word problems? Usually, they have a matching equation that corresponds with the question. Another important component is recognizing visual models that also represent the word problem. These models can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Teach Starter has a resource for you that will help your students connect word problems to their matching visual model and equation.

To play, cut apart task cards and place them in bags to separate for students or groups. Students organize their cards by type (equation, model, or word problem) and analyze them carefully to make matches. Once they have made all 12 sets, they can record their matches on the recording sheet provided.

Through this activity, students will show they can write equations from word stories and visual models using letters for an unknown quantity.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your math lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this equation-matching activity to enhance learning through guided math groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Encourage students who need additional support to make 2 matches rather than 3. As an example, students can match the word problem with the corresponding visual model.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

If there are students who need a bit of a challenge, have students create their own matches using more complex equations, including decimal and fraction calculations.

❓Odd Man Out

Place 3 cards at each station, making sure 2 of the cards represent the same scenario, and the 3rd card is different. Student pairs will rotate through each station and identify the correct pair, writing their answers on a separate sheet of paper.
