Model Equivalent Fractions
When students first learn to work with equivalent fractions, using fraction models can be particularly important. Students need to physically see how the amount of the model that is shaded can be the same even though there are different numbers of pieces. Students learn to recognize that if the piece size is smaller, they will need more pieces to cover the same amount of the figure.
