Estimating Sums and Differences – Worksheets for 4th Grade

With this set of printable worksheets, you will receive three different levels of our estimating sums and differences worksheet. Each level is indicated with either one, two or three stars in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

As your students are working through the problems, you will find that they are scaffolded in a manor to where they will:

  • Practice rounding individual numbers
  • Determine compatible numbers for a set of given numbers
  • Label number lines, plot points and determine the estimated sum or difference
  • Answer word problems involving estimation

These teacher-created worksheets can be used as independent practice pages after a lesson, a homework assignment or even a task to complete in a math center.

Teach How to Estimate the Sum and Difference of Two Numbers

We know that estimation is an important life skill as mental math is used in a variety of situations. Teaching your students from early on how to estimate sums and differences will give them the practice they need, so they are able to accurately estimate.

For students who may need additional support, start by assigning the 1-star worksheet. Additionally, consider providing number lines, base ten blocks, or completed examples to assist.

If there are students in need of a challenge, assign the 3-star worksheet or invite students to complete multiple levels of the task.
