Substitute values for variables and use your understanding of the order of operations to solve expressions with this worksheet.
How to Evaluate Expressions
What exactly does it mean to evaluate an expression? Once students enter 6th grade, they begin to recognize that values can be substituted for letters that are present in an expression. After swapping the variable with the number, students then use the order of operations to determine an answer. Students first begin to evaluate expressions with single variables and then move on to using multiple variables.
Teach Starter has created a fun mystery picture worksheet that your students can complete as they learn how to work with variables. After solving all of the problems, students will color the grid according to the color guide to reveal a mystery image.
An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
For students who need an additional challenge, consider using the editable version and include negative values or decimal amounts.
If students require additional support, they can use a multiplication chart to help with basic problems. Additionally, you could limit the number of problems a student must solve and provide the answers to some of the questions to lessen the workload.
