- He landed on the mainland of North America but thought he was on an island. He named the location St. Augustine.
- He discovered the Gulf Stream, the warm ocean current that flows northward.
- In July of 1521, a group of local Natives attacked the party of settlers, leaving Ponce de León fatally wounded by an arrow. His group traveled to Havana, Cuba, where he died.
