Working on those sticky final ‘e’ words with your students?

This puzzle presents long /o/ vowel words that end in ‘e’ as a fun puzzle where students can see their reading progress as they play! 

Through this activity, students will show they can decode words with final ‘e’ conventions for representing long vowel sounds. 

Puzzled By Silent Final e Words?

Use this resource in your reading center, guided reading, or with your whole class (see below) to practice reading words with long ‘o’ vowel sounds and final ‘e.’

To play, students will read the word card and cover the matching picture to complete the puzzle. 

Scaffolding + Extension Tips 

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by using a visual reminder of letter sounds such as an alphabet chart or desk plate. 

Challenge students who already understand the concept to produce additional words for each vowel sound.

One Game = Many Silent Final e Word Activities

Use this resource as independent practice for fast finishers and full-class learning opportunities like scoot activities, lesson reviews, formative assessments, and more.

🔎 Scavenger Hunt

Hide the word pieces around the room when your students are not around and put the picture card in the center of the room. Then set your students loose! As soon as they find a piece they bring it up to the picture card, say the word on the card, and put it on the matching picture.

NOTE: You may want to make a rule of only 1 student at a card at one time. If not, things could get a little crazy! 🤪

✏️ Write It Out

This activity can also be used as a formative assessment. Project the picture board and have each student pick 3 words. Students will write the words on a separate sheet of paper. 

👯 Match Me If You Can

In your guided reading group, shuffle and divide the cards evenly among students. Then, point to a picture on the board and have them say the word as a group. The student who has the matching word card lays it down face up. The first person to have all their cards face up wins.

Print on cardstock for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.
