A Decimal Place Value Game for the Whole Class!

Are you looking for a fun, whole-class game that aims to build skills that involve decimal place value? Teach Starter has developed a fun activity that will get your students up and moving while learning at the same time!

This resource consists of a five-by-five Bingo grid and a set of 40 decimal “name tags.” Students play the game by finding other classmates wearing a name tag with a decimal that fits each description on the Bingo grid. Students will work to find numbers that fit descriptions such as:

• Has a zero in the tenths place
• Is equal to four tenths and one hundredth
• Has a value greater than one dollar

Here’s some more detailed instructions on how to play this decimal place value game:

1. Print a Bingo grid recording sheet for each student to use.
2. Print the name tags, cut them out and distribute one to each student.
3. Students can either tape their name tags to their shirts or create a necklace by punching two holes at the top and attaching a piece of string to it.
4. Students move around the room with their recording sheets and try to find other students who have decimal names to fit each description on their paper. The teacher can determine if students need to complete all of the squares or if a traditional Bingo format will be used.

Through this activity, students will recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

Differentiate This Decimal Place Value Game 

This math game makes a fantastic lesson warm-up or wrap-up activity. If you’re looking for ways to differentiate this game to meet the varied needs of your learners, check out the suggestions below:

• Challenge students by having them use each classmate’s decimal name once on their recording chart. This way, students will have to find a different decimal for each description.
• Support students by partnering them up with a classmate to complete the activity, or reducing the number of decimal names they need to fill in on their Bingo grid.
