As one of America’s most renowned and loved presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt has become a part of American history that simply cannot be ignored. There is a lot of information about Roosevelt and his presidency, so it’s hard to decide what to teach young learners about the only president in history to serve more than two terms.

This reading passage is designed to get back to basics. Written for students in grades 5-6, this reading passage contains basic biographical information about President Franklin Roosevelt. It travels through his life and discusses his accomplishments and achievements.

This passage can be used as an assessment or guided reading activity for your students. It includes biographical text about Roosevelt, a 10-question comprehension check, and a timeline of FDR’s life.

Fun Franklin D. Roosevelt Facts for Kids

Need some more fun facts about the nation’s only president to serve four terms in office? Here are a few favorites from our teacher team to share with your students about our 32nd president!

  1. The “D” in FDR stands for his middle name, Delano. It was his mother’s maiden name, and it just so happens that presidents Ulysses Grant and Calvin Coolidge were also members of the Delano family.
  2. Roosevelt loved his Scottish Terrier dog, Fala, and often took him with him on trips.
  3. He was married to his cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt, who later became a famous human rights activist.
  4. Roosevelt loved to collect stamps and had one of the largest stamp collections in the world.
  5. Our 32nd president loved to collect naval ships and had more than 20,000 toy and model ships in his collection.
  6. During World War II, Roosevelt created the Lend-Lease program, which helped the United States send military aid to other countries fighting against Germany and Japan.
  7. He was the first President to have a press corps travel with him on an international trip. Journalists traveled with FDR to his meeting with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin at the Tehran Conference in 1943.
