A Hands-on Function Machine Game

Engage your students with this function machine matching game that reinforces the concept of function machines and their rules! In this game, students match 18 function machine cards (each featuring a robot with a mathematical rule) to 18 table cards that display input/output tables following the rule. This resource helps students practice using all four operations in number patterns and strengthens their understanding of functions in a fun and interactive way. Perfect for group work or individual practice, the game includes easy-to-follow instructions and a helpful answer key.

This function machine matching activity includes:

  • 18 function machine cards
  • 18 table cards
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key
  • Instructions

Add this dynamic resource to your classroom for a fun way to practice functions!

Using These Function Machines Match-Up Cards

These function machine cards can be used in a variety of ways! Here are some ideas on how to use them to enhance your lessons on number patterns:

  • Partner Hunt: Count enough machine/table card pairs for every student in your class. Mix the pairs and give one to each student. Ask students to stand up and search for their mystery partner who has the matching card.
  • Math Centers: This function machine matching game works wonderfully in a math center as the answer key makes it self-checking. Print the cards on cardstock and laminate them to use them in your centers for years!
  • Memory: Students can use these cards to play a game of “Memory.” To play, they spread the function machine cards and the table cards out in separate areas, facing down. Students then turn over one of each card, trying to find a match. If they find a match, they keep the pair, otherwise they turn the cards back over. Students take turns flipping card pairs and the student with the most pairs at the end wins!
