Get Going on Capacity with a Gallon Man Printable!

Are your students struggling with working out those conversions in your capacity unit? We have the perfect visual mnemonic device for helping your students remember.

  • How many cups are in a gallon?
  • How many pints are in a quart?
  • How many pints are in a gallon?
  • And more!

Using this simple visual, your students will breeze through those conversions and love having it there as a reference for their assignments.

Gallon Man, Gallon Bot, Gallon Guy, Oh My!

Who is this Mr. Gallon? Gallon Bot is a graphical mnemonic character that allows students to visualize the units of capacity when working with measurement conversions. Gallon Bot has a gallon-sized body and four quart-sized arms since there are four quarts in a gallon. Each quart-sized arm extends to pint-sized lower arms and then to cup-sized cuffs. Put all of those pieces together, and you have a fun craft and a memorable mathematical strategy for your students to use for years to come! When we asked the Teach Starter team, most of them still remember using gallon man to work with capacity!

How to Make the Gallon Man…Image Included!

Gallon Man is easy to make. We’ve included a three-page printable template and a Mr. Gallon image to help them with assembly. Print your students a copy of the template after your initial instruction on units of conversion, make Gallon Guy, then stand back and watch.

Once he’s all together, give your students a practice problem and watch the light bulbs come on! It’s amazing how Mr. Gallon connects those fuzzy little dots when it comes to conversions.
