Digital Learning Activities for Abbreviations

🤙🏽Calling all grammar teachers, reading specialists, and other educators! Don’t pass out another worksheet on abbreviations! Let your students practice the same skills with a Google Interactive activity instead. The interactive features a variety of standard abbreviations used in daily life—including Dr., Mr., Mrs., St., etc.— and their corresponding full-word forms.

With this resource, students will complete the following tasks:

  • Match standard abbreviations with their corresponding full-word forms.
  • Match the abbreviations for months of the year, days of the week, and units of measurement with the corresponding complete word versions.
  • Type and spell the correct abbreviations for a list of words.
  • Identify and type the appropriate abbreviations to complete sentences.
  • Identify the complete word when given an abbreviation.

Through this activity, students will improve their skills with writing and using standard abbreviations.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your Language Arts lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided writing groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners and ELL/ESL students, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

  • Complete the activity in small groups or with 1:1 aid as needed.
  • Allow students to use an abbreviations anchor chart or reference guide during the completion of the activity.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

  • Challenge fast finishers to use abbreviations in sentences of their own.
  • Provide enrichment and additional practice with an abbreviations board game, card game, or worksheet.

🧑‍🏫 Group Learning

Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.
