It’s Heating Up! Heat Sources Activity

Use this teaching resource when introducing your students to sources of heat energy. Students read and cut out the descriptions of situations where heat is being produced, then paste each case into the correct column. The following heat sources are included in this worksheet:

  • Electrical Heat Sources – created heat from electricity
  • Kinetic Heat Sources – create heat from friction caused by movement
  • Chemical Heat Sources – create heat from chemical reactions such as burning

More Heat Source Activities

  1. Create a simple solar oven using a pizza box, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap. Place marshmallows or chocolate in the oven and watch them melt in the sun.
  2. Use different candles to show how the size and type of a candle can affect the heat and flame.
  3. Show kids how water boils on the stovetop. Discuss the concept of boiling point and the energy required to change water from a liquid to a gas.
  4. Have kids place ice cubes in separate containers. Sprinkle salt on one ice in one container and observe how the ice melts faster.
  5. Apply a thin layer of tempera paint on the kids’ hands and have them press their hands onto paper. Use a hair dryer to gently heat the handprints, causing the pain to dry quickly.
