Looking for Examples of Homophones Sentences?

Homophones have a reputation for being some of the trickiest words in the English language for students to spell. It’s not that they’re particularly long words, and many of them aren’t phonetically irregular. It’s primarily due to the fact that these tricky little words sound the same when spoken but have different meanings and spellings. Because of this, it’s very easy for our students to get these words confused and use the wrong homophone in their writing.

Teachers, we feel your pain and we are here to help! Our experienced team of teachers has created this set of 36 task cards to provide your students with practice selecting the correct homophone to use in a variety of sentences. Each card contains a sentence with a word missing. The students must select the correct homophone to complete the sentence from the two options provided. For example:

Thank you for the beautiful __________!

a) flour

b) flower

Once the students have worked at the correct answer (in this case, flower) they circle the correct letter on the recording sheet. An answer key is also provided in the download to enable students to self-correct their work.

This resource downloads as a full-color PDF or an editable Google Slides file.

These homophones task cards provide a great opportunity for your students to explore examples of sentences containing common homophones.

Multiple Uses for These Homophones Task Cards

One of the benefits of using task cards as a teaching resource is their versatility!

These homophones task cards can be used in multiple ways in your classroom. Check out some great ideas from our experienced teacher team!

  1. Scoot Activity – Place the cards around the classroom in an accessible location. Send pairs or small groups of students to one particular card as a starting location. Give the students a couple of minutes to answer the question on their task card. After a few minutes, shout out, “SCOOT!” Students then move on to the next card. Continue playing until all cards have been answered.
  2. This or That? – Label one side of your classroom as Side A and the other side as Side B. Project one of the task cards onto your interactive whiteboard and read the sentence aloud. Have the students move to either Side A or Side B of the classroom, depending on which homophone they think is correct.
  3. Whiteboard Whip Around – Provide each student with a mini whiteboard and a whiteboard marker. Project one of the task cards onto your interactive whiteboard and read the sentence aloud. Have the students write A or B on their whiteboard, depending on which homophone they think is correct. Scan your eyes over the students’ responses to see who has answered correctly and who needs further support.

Download and Use These Homophones Task Cards

Use the Download button above to access the easy-print PDF or the editable Google Slides file. (Note: You will be prompted to make a copy of the Google Slides template before accessing it).

As this resource contains an answer sheet, we recommended printing one copy of the resource, removing the answer page, then making copies as required. Cardboard is recommended for the task cards to increase their durability.
