Support students' phonemic awareness development with this fun I Spy phoneme blending activity.
Phoneme Detectives: Crack the Code with This Fun Blending Activity!
This fun activity has been created by a teacher and invites students to become blending detectives, tasked with solving the mystery of blending sounds into words.
What is included in this resource?
- 3 different I Spy boards (three different colors)
- Matching word cards for each board
- Title Page with brief directions.
How It Works:
- Set the Scene: Hand out the I Spy game boards, each featuring a variety of images.
- Call Out Phonemes: Using the provided word cards, call out the individual phonemes of simple CVC words (e.g., /c/ – /a/ – /t/).
- Detective Duty: Students will blend the sounds together to “crack the code” and figure out the word.
- Match & Mark: Once they solve the word, they place a counter on the matching image on their board.
How to Use this Resource in the Classroom

- Small Group Work: Use it in literacy centers or small group rotations for targeted phonemic awareness practice.
- Whole Class Game: Call out phonemes to the whole class and see who can find the matching images the fastest.
- Partner Play: Pair up students and have them take turns blending phonemes and finding the images together.
