Identify long e words with an I-Spy worksheet.

I Spy… CVCe Words!

Use this printable worksheet during your phonics lessons when exploring CVCe words – that is, words containing the split long vowel digraph created by the magic e!

Students are encouraged to spy the silent e words on the worksheet. To do this, they will need to be able to differentiate between the long and short vowel sounds in words. Once they have found all of the words with long e, they can indicate these in a variety of ways, such as:

  • coloring the pictures
  • circling the pictures
  • crossing out words that are not on a silent e word list
  • writing a list of words with silent e.

An answer sheet is provided should you wish to correct the worksheet as a class, or for students to self-correct their work.

Scaffold and Extend Your Silent E Worksheets

Have fast finishers create their own “I Spy CVCe Words” challenge for a partner to complete. Have them draw three pictures – two that are CVCe words and one that is a CVC word. Let students swap with a partner to complete each other’s tasks.

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by completing the activity as a part of an adult-supported, small-group session. Look at each word in turn, say the word aloud, and support the students in identifying the long vowel sounds.
