Decomposing Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

These teaching slides provide instruction on decomposing mixed numbers and improper fractions into their whole number and fractional parts.

For example:

12/5 = 5/5 + 5/5 + 2/5 , or 1 + 1 + ⅖

3 ¼ = 4/4 + 4/4 + 4/4 + 1/4  or  1 + 1 + 1 + ¼

This improper fractions and mixed numbers practice slide deck does not have detailed instructions on converting between the two, but it is a good starting point as it offers many examples and models to build understanding.
