Choose the Best Informal Units of Measurement for Mass & Use Them!

This simple worksheet packs a bundle of ways for students to practice their knowledge of choosing and using the best informal units of measurement. In this mass worksheet, students will have to choose between the following informal units of measuring mass:

Counters, blocks, glue sticks, bulldog clip, highlighters and erasers.

All these items can be found in most classrooms, making it an easy hands-on classroom activity to complete.

Learning about informal units of measurement is important for young mathematicians as it helps them to build foundational math concepts in a relatable and hands-on way. It also helps students to compare and contrast the mass of different objects in the classroom. Once children feel comfortable with informal units, they are then better prepared to learn about standard units of measurement.

How to Use this Informal Units of Measurement Worksheet in the Classroom

While this may just look like a worksheet, it forms the basis for a fantastic engaging mathematical experience within the classroom. What you’ll need to make sure you have to begin this activity are the following items:

  • Clipboard
  • Sharpener
  • Book
  • Pencil case
  • Sticky tape dispenser
  • Calculator

These are the items that are listed on the worksheet and the students then need to decide from the images at the bottom of the worksheet what would be the best item for each to use to measure each item and then use balance scales to measure each item.

To extend students, you may like to ask them why it would be tricky to compare and contrast these items based on their weight…
