Help students identify the properties of 2D shapes with this 10-slide interactive activity.
🟡 ❓ 2D Shapes Mystery Bag Interactive Activity🔺🔷
Get your little shape detective on the case! Help your students to discover, identify, and recognize 2D shapes as everyday objects. This exciting and engaging digital activity will refresh students’ knowledge of 2D shapes and have them name the shape they think is hiding within the mystery bag!
This 10-slide deck includes:
- An instruction slide that explains the activity
- Eight interactive ‘Mystery Shape” slides featuring a variety of 2D shapes
To use this resource, read the instructions to students so they know how the activity works. Check the clues on each slide then drag the star onto one of three shape choices provided on the right of the slide to select the answer. Once an answer has been selected, drag the magnifying glass on top of the Mystery Bag to reveal the correct answer!
Through this activity, students will show that they can recognize and describe familiar 2D shapes, giving reasons for their choices.
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your Math lessons.
In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through Math centers, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
Ask students to write or draw which shape they think is hidden on each slide in their notepads or on dry-erase boards before the correct answer is revealed. Review and scaffold students’ understanding through guided questions and further discussion.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
As an extension task, have students pair-up and make a list of 2D shapes they can observe in the learning environment.
Alternatively, student pairs could take turns creating a “Mystery Shape” on a geoboard with elastic bands and having a peer guess which shapes they are, based only on the first student’s description of the features.
🧑🏫 Group Learning
Project the slides onto a screen, and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or dry-erase boards.
