A Koala Information Report Project for Kids

Are you looking for an informational writing project to assess your students’ knowledge and understanding of the purpose, structure and language features of information texts? If so, look no further than Teach Starter’s koala information report writing project!

This information report writing project has been designed by our experienced teacher team to support your students in writing a high-quality information report about one of Australia’s most iconic animals – the koala. Students will be guided through the process of researching facts about koalas and then using these facts to write a detailed information report. Here’s how:

  1. Research – Students will gather important information on koalas using the fact file included as well as other sources of their choice.
  2. Record – Students will complete the graphic organisers to sort the information they have collected into groups.
  3. Write – Students will use the research they have gathered to write a koala information report on the pages provided. Alternatively, they may like to present their information using a medium of their choice.

You’ll find everything you need to implement this koala information report writing project in the comprehensive student workbook. The workbook contains the following:

  • Koala fact file
  • Research graphic organiser
  • 2-page writing scaffold
  • Lined writing page
  • Unlined writing page

This koala information report writing project downloads as a:

  • PDF with full-color fact file
  • PDF with black-and-white fact file
  • Google Slides file (containing both the color and black-and-white fact files)

This koala information report project combines literacy skills with research skills, making it a versatile resource for developing students’ writing abilities while engaging them in meaningful content.

Using This Koala Information Report Project in Your Classroom

Are you looking for some ideas as to how you might implement this writing activity in your classroom? Here is one teacher’s suggested approach:

  1. Independent Writing Activity – Students can use the fact file and scaffold to write their own reports independently. This activity is a great way for students to practice organizing information, writing clearly and using factual evidence in their writing.
  2. Group Research Project – Divide students into small groups and assign each group a different aspect of koalas, such as habitat, diet or behavior. Each group can research additional information beyond the fact file and collaborate to write a group report, which can then be presented to the class.
  3. Cross-Curricular Connections – Link this writing project to other subjects. In science, explore the biology and ecology of koalas. In art, students can create drawings or models of koalas to accompany their reports. This integration makes learning more engaging and multidimensional.
