How Does Labeling a Picture Help My Students Become Better Writers?

Believe it or not, labeling pictures is an actual developmental stage of emergent writers.  Many children will initially share their stories or ideas through pictures and then begin to use letters and sounds to represent objects in their drawings. These types of activities lay the foundation for building better writers. Why is that? Let’s find out…

Labeling pictures benefits students by

  • helping students learn to read and write by providing a concrete visual representation of the words they are learning.
  • aiding their understanding of the words’ meanings and their use in sentences.
  • providing a context for the words, making them more memorable and easier to recall.
  • helping students develop their fine motor skills, as they practice writing the words themselves.

This activity is the ideal teaching resource for encouraging early reading skills. Expose your students to setting-related vocabulary and help build their ability to recognize the words by sight. The activity could be used in small groups.

The resource consists of the following:

  • four different setting posters
  • a set of vocabulary words for each poster.

Two blank word cards are also included for each setting.
