Letter Sound Recognition Activity for Small Group Work

This letter sound recognition activity has been created by an experienced teacher as another way for you to explore letter sound recognition in your early years classroom.

Students will recognize the letter on the task card, say the name of each image aloud, and place a counter on the items as they say them. This activity helps reinforce both letter recognition and phonemic awareness, encouraging students to connect the sound of the letter with the objects that start with that sound.

How to Use this Letter Sound Knowledge Activity

Instructions:

  1. Look at the Letter: The task card will feature a large letter, such as /b/, /s/, or /m/, at the top.
  2. Identify the Images: The task card will show several images (e.g., a ball, a bell, a bat) underneath the letter.
  3. Say Each Image Out Loud: Students will look at each image and say the word out loud, focusing on the beginning sound of each word.
  4. Place a Counter: As they say each word, students will place a counter (or use another small object like a coin or button) on top of the corresponding image.
  5. Check for Matching Sounds: Students will then check to see which of the images begin with the same letter sound as the letter on the task card.

This activity helps students build connections between letters and sounds while also practicing their listening and speaking skills. It also provides an engaging way to practice phonics and early literacy skills.
