An activity for students to determine which of 2 related facts is a main idea and which is a supporting detail.
Sorting the Main Idea from the Supporting Detail
Finding the main idea of a text is a challenging and critical skill for students. This sorting activity gives students practise distinguishing between a main idea and a supporting detail. Students will first find the two related sentences and then determine which column to place them in.
The download includes two separate resources, both of which work on the same skill. Each resource has a separate colour scheme so they can be put into a reading area and used by different groups of students. The sentences with a yellow background match the yellow mat, and those with a blue background match the blue mat.

Print on cardstock cut out the sentence strips, and place them in a sealable bag with the corresponding mat. Attach hook and loop dots to the mat and the back of the sentence strips to make this more hands-on.
An answer sheet for both sets is included.
