What Is the Meaning of Infer?

As a teacher, teaching your students what it means to infer is an exciting opportunity to help them tap into their critical thinking skills. Essentially, it’s the process of using clues and information in a text to make educated guesses or conclusions that aren’t explicitly stated. This skill helps students unlock deeper meanings, anticipate outcomes and better comprehend what they’re reading by piecing together information from the text and their own experiences. By encouraging students to read between the lines, they can become more thoughtful readers and confident learners, equipped with the tools to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Making Inferences Worksheets for 1st and 2nd Grade

Teach Starter has created a set of 4 worksheets that are ready for you to use with your students as they embark on their journey of making inferences. These worksheets are designed in a manner where students will read a simple sentence with an accompanying picture and select an inference statement from the 3 given options.

Some of the questions your students might answer include:

The farmer is wearing sunglasses.

  • It is raining outside today.
  • It is snowing outside today.
  • It is a sunny outside today.

Sam is cheering with her hands in the air.

  • Her team won the soccer game.
  • Her chips fell on the floor.
  • Her dog is sleeping.
