Introducing Measurement With Informal Units

Have you ever wondered why measurement is always introduced to young learners through the use of informal units? It may seem like the best route to take would be to dive straight into standard units of length, but there is a reason for starting out with informal or nonstandard units. This strategy of instruction is most beneficial because

  • Using informal units like blocks, counters, or paperclips allows students to physically manipulate and see the concept of measurement. This hands-on experience is important for young learners who are still developing abstract thinking skills.
  • By first experiencing measurement through informal units, students can better understand the need for standard units. They see the limits of informal units, such as inconsistency, which naturally lead into the introduction of rulers, tape measures, and other measurement tools.

Printable Informal Units Measurement Worksheets

This printable resource pack includes three printable worksheets. You can use this teaching resource when exploring the concept of measuring length with informal units. To complete, students will measure objects in squares, compare their lengths and then order the objects from shortest to longest. This resource could also be used as an assessment piece to test students’ understanding of the concept of length.

An answer sheet has also been included.
