What Are Some Different Ways to Teach Multiplication?

There are many different ways to teach your young learners about the concept of multiplication. Strategies such as repeated addition, using arrays and skip counting are all methods to help your students understand the concept of multiplication.

Another common method that is used is demonstrating how the “x” symbol stands for “groups of” and can be represented with a visual model. By drawing groups with an equal number of objects in each group this can be used to represent a multiplication problem. For example, if you have 3 circles, each with 5 stars inside, this represents the problem 3 x 5.

Equal Groups Practice Pages

Teach Starter has created an engaging color-by-number worksheet to help your students master their understanding of relating equal groups to multiplication problems. With this teacher-created resource, you will receive a color-by-number worksheet, a question page, color guide and an answer key.

To complete this activity, students must look at each equal group model and then look at the color guide to find the matching multiplication fact. Students will then solve the problem and color the product according to the color listed. When guiding your students through this activity, remember that the “x” stands for “groups of.”
