Let’s Learn How to Multiply on the Number Line!

Are you teaching your students the number line strategy for multiplying numbers? This strategy combines an understanding of skip counting and equal groups and also uses a familiar math tool, a number line! So, how do you exactly teach your students this multiplication strategy? Let’s take a quick look at this method of multiplication.

When teaching your students to multiply on the number line, it is important to point out that the number line can be scaled by 1, 2, 5, 10, or any other number. As students learn to read an expression such as 6 x 4, you can also teach them that this can be read as “6 hops of 4.” On a number line, students are to make 6 equal-sized jumps that land on the multiples of 4. After drawing their model, they will land on the product, 24.

Third-Grade Multiplication Worksheets for Your Classroom!

If you are looking for an engaging activity to help your students solidify their understanding of number line multiplication, you have come to the right place! Teach Starter has created a cut-and-paste worksheet pack to reinforce this skill. Inside this teacher-created resource, you will find 5 different worksheets. The number lines on each worksheet are scaled differently to suit your students’ needs.

  • Version 1: Scaled by 1
  • Version 2: Scaled by 2
  • Version 3: Scaled by 3
  • Version 4: Scaled by 5
  • Version 5: Scaled by 10

Regardless of the version you choose, students will solve the multiplication problems along the right-hand side of the worksheet. They will then cut apart the pieces and glue them next to the corresponding number line.
