Mixed Number Word Problems

Are your students in need of additional practice with word problems and multiplying mixed numbers? Let’s take a look at how mixed numbers can be multiplied together.

  1. Convert the mixed numbers to fractions by finding the equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
  2. Multiply the fractions together using the standard rules for multiplying fractions.
  3. Simplify the resulting fraction, if possible.
  4. If the resulting fraction is greater than 1, convert it back to a mixed number by finding the whole number part and the fraction part.

Here’s an example:

Suppose you want to multiply the mixed numbers 2 ¾ and 1 1/12.

  1. Convert the mixed numbers to fractions 2 ¾ = 11/4 and 1 ½ = 3/2.
  2. Multiply the fractions (11/4) x (3/2) = 33/8
  3. Convert the fraction to a mixed number. 4 ⅛

So, the answer is 4 ⅛.

Teach Starter has created a worksheet where students will solve 10 problems where students must multiply mixed numbers.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

  • Guided math groups
  • Lesson warm-up
  • Lesson wrap-up
  • Fast finishers
  • Homework assignment
  • Whole-class review (via smartboard)

If there are students who need a bit of a challenge, encourage them to list their answers in order from least to greatest.

For students who need a bit of support, consider using the editable version so that students only have to work with fractions and not mixed numbers. Additionally, this activity can be completed with a small group or in a 1-on-1 setting.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on cardstock and slipping it into a dry-erase sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
