This fun and educational musical instruments game helps students learn about the different families of orchestra instruments. With 18 instrument cards featuring real pictures, students will sort the instruments into the correct family—percussion, string, brass, or woodwind. The activity also includes four family banners to organize the instruments and a recording sheet for students to document their answers. This hands-on resource promotes learning through visual and tactile engagement.

Playing This Instrument Families Game

This instrument families game is perfect for both individual and group work, making it a versatile addition to your music curriculum. Here is how to prepare and play this sorting musical instruments game:

Preparation:

  • Download the resource in the format of your choice. 
  • Print the resource. (We recommend printing the cards and banners on cardstock.) 
  • Cut apart the cards and banners and laminate for durability. 
  • Provide each student with a copy of the recording sheet and a pencil. 

Play:

  1. Students mix the cards, place them in a pile, and spread out the orchestra family banners. 
  2. Students take turns drawing a card and then sorting it under the correct instrument family. 
  3. Students discuss the answer and record it on the provided sheet. 
  4. Once students have sorted all of the instruments, they can consult the answer key to check their answers.
