Break the ice with your students on Day 1 with this silly movement game.
Create a Positive Learning Environment
The first day of school can be a scary time for young students – especially those who have never been in a formal school setting before. That’s why icebreakers are a must on Day 1!
Icebreakers help set a positive tone for the school year by creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. They allow students to feel more comfortable, reducing anxiety and nerves associated with starting a new academic year. They also encourage students to interact with each other, promoting the formation of friendships and social connections. Strong relationships among students and between students and teachers can lead to a more supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Melt away the fear and anxiety with our Oink, Meow, Moo Icebreaker Game. This game gets your new students out of their seats and working together towards a common goal – finding their animal group by listening only to the animal sounds coming from their classmates. (More elaborate directions are included in the download.)
This game isn’t just for the back-to-school season; why not try it as:
- A brain break when your students are getting restless.
- An indoor recess activity when it’s too cold or rainy to head outside.
- A random partner generator. Give each student an animal card. Play music while your students walk around the room. When the music stops, the student nearest them with a matching picture becomes their new partner!
