Let’s Learn Onset and Rime CVC Words

This set of flipbooks has been designed by an experienced early years teacher to make learning about onset and rime words fun and interactive. They include activities where students have to break apart the onset and rime of each of the CVC words and draw a matching picture. This creates a fantastic-hands-on approach to reinforcing their understanding and builds their reading confidence with developing their phonemic awareness.

The following onset and rime groups and list of words have been included:

  • Short A (bat, hat, rag, bag, tag, mad, sad, pad, gap, lap, tap, nap, ham, ram, jam, bam, yam, can, ran, tan, man and van).
  • Short E (leg, beg, red, fed, wed, den, pen, ten, pet, jet, vet and net).
  • Short I (kid, hid, sit, hit, bit, dig, wig, fig, dip, hip, tip, sip, win, bin, pin, fin and tin)
  • Short O (sob, job, cop, hop, mop, dot, pot, cot, log, fog, bog and jog)
  • Short U (yum, hum, sub, nub, cub, fun, run, bun, hut, nut, gut, rut, rug, hug, tug, pug and jug)

How to Create this Flipbook

Although this flipbook does use a bit of paper per student – you won’t regret getting them to complete this engaging activity. Here are some steps for getting organized with this resource:

  1. Give each student a copy of the writing pages. Run them as a packet and staple them for easier distribution.
  2. Have students cut out each flipbook page along the dotted line.
  3. Once all 8 pages are cut apart, have students stack them from largest to smallest, lining up the top.
  4. Staple together across the top to assemble the flipbook!
