Onset and Rime vs Word Families

Many people ask, isn’t onset and rime just learning word families. And while they are connected, it’s still vital that teachers break down and teach the onset and rime components. Each of these components can be mixed and matched to created word families.

Therefore onset and rime focuses on the individual phonemes of words, helping students with decoding and phonemic awareness, where as word families focus on grouping similar words based on patterns to enhance vocabulary development.
