Match Onset and Rime Using these Worksheets

These worksheets have been created by an experienced teacher to help teachers develop phonemic awareness, an important component of early reading skills. The main idea for the worksheets is to help children to recognize and manipulate sounds in words by breaking them down into their onset (the initial consonant sound) and rime (the vowel and following consonant).

Worksheets and activities such as this worksheet pack provide students with the opportunity to identify patterns in words which improves their ability to decode new words. This not only builds students’ phonemic awareness but also boosts their confidence in reading.

How to use Worksheets in Phonics Lessons

Using a range of resources in the early years setting is important to reinforce and practice phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Here are some suggested ways you can use these worksheets in your classroom:

  1. Introducing each of the word lists (short vowel sound) to your students.
  2. Using the matching up as examples of onset and rime for the whole class.
  3. Individual practice after a whole class lesson on onset and rime words.
  4. Small group work – have students work together to match up the onset and rime words.
  5. Extension activities for those students ready for all of the worksheets in this bundle.
