Ultimate Onset and Rime Worksheets

This set of worksheets has been created for younger students to help them to practice decoding onset and rime words with the same rime (word families). Students are provided with a number of different word ladders and pictures to cut out. They must read the word and then find the matching image of that word and glue it beside the word on the ladder.

This is a great activity to have students decode the word and then show their understanding of that word by matching the correct image to that word.

What are Word Ladders?

Word ladders are a great educational activity to help students build their vocabulary and in this case, their phonemic awareness. The word ladder concept involves starting with one word and then changing one letter at a time to create a new word. With onset and rime words and word patterns. Word ladders are fantastic to emphasize the patterns and get students recognizing these patterns in words.

This set of word ladders are extremely versatile and can be used to suit varies skill levels and abilities. You may like to just provide students with two ladders to sort through a smaller amount of words and images – or the whole amount.

You can also print these word ladders out on colored paper and laminate them to use them more as a re-usable sorting activity – rather than a cut and paste and use once activity. Using them as more of a sorting activity is great for small group work.
