Not Your Average Onset and Rime Worksheet Pack
Print out this set of 15 worksheets and create an onset and rime booklet for your students to explore the different word families that can be made with onset and rime elements. This worksheet pack draws on a fun and engaging sentence to start with and then asks students to brainstorm different words that have the same rime as what is mentioned in the sentence. Here are just some of the fun and engaging sentences included on these onset and rime worksheets:
- Find a treasure on the map. Can you make words with ap?
- Bubbles fizz from the can. Can you make words with an?
- ‘Meow’ said the black cat. Can you make words with at?
On each worksheet there are a number or circles where students then brainstorm different words that end in the same rime.
How to Use these Worksheets in the Classroom
This versatile set of worksheets can be used in a variety of ways in the classroom, here are some suggestions provided by an early years teacher:
- Send a sheet home for students to complete as homework or to do with their family.
- Create a booklet with all of them together and work on them throughout your phonics lessons.
- Display one at the start of your phonics lessons as a warm up and get your students to brainstorm together.
- Print each page on a larger sheet of paper, brainstorm as a class and then display each sheet in the classroom as a phonics display!
