Help students construct a detailed and reasoned opinion text with this opinion writing activity.
Opinion Writing Task Templates
This set of templates has been created to help teach opinion writing to your students. Discuss the writing prompt as a class. Students choose whether they are “for” or “against” the statement, then select three reasons from the prompt which support their opinion.
Students then plan and write a detailed opinion text using the worksheets provided in the resource.
How to Use this Opinion Writing Task Set in the Classroom
- Introduce the Prompt – Begin by presenting the statement, “Movies are more enjoyable than books.” Complete a class discussion to ensure students understand the prompt and encourage them to think critically about both sides of the argument.
- Choose a Stance – Ask students to decide whether they agree (“for”) or disagree (“against”) with the statement. Remind them to think about their personal experiences or preferences when choosing their stance.
- Select Supporting Reasons – Students should review the provided reasons for both sides of the argument. They will choose three reasons that best support their opinion.
- Plan Using the OREO Template – Guide students to organize their thoughts using the Opinion Text OREO Planning Template. This will help them structure their opinion text by clearly outlining their opening statement, reasons with examples, and a concluding statement.
- Write the Opinion Text – Using the scaffold worksheet, students will draft a detailed opinion text. Encourage them to expand on their reasons with specific examples and persuasive language.
- Review and Edit – Once students have completed their writing, provide time for them to review and edit their work. Peer review can also be incorporated to give constructive feedback.
