Finding Elapsed Time Isn’t a Puzzle Anymore!

Ask any teacher their opinion on teaching elapsed time, and they’ll give you a simple answer…it’s TOUGH! Elapsed time is a very abstract concept and one that students struggle with extremely often. It takes a lot of practice, reteaching, and a variety of instructional methods to finally get your students to understand the basics. That’s why we’ve been busy creating new teaching tools and elapsed time printables for you and your students!

Order Up! Elapsed Time Puzzles for Kids

This printable resource pack is packed with nine different Order Up! Elapsed Time Puzzles. Need a few instructions? Here you go!

  1. Make copies of one of the puzzle strip worksheets. Each sheet includes three identical puzzle strips, so you only need to copy enough pages for the number of students in your classroom divided by 3. (Hello, Paper Saver!) Cut into thirds before handing out.
  2. Make copies of one of the puzzle strip mats for your students, following the same rules as above. Cut into thirds before handing out.
  3. Students will cut apart the puzzle strip and then glue the START strip in the top box of their puzzle mat.
  4. Students will solve the problem on the first puzzle strip and then locate the puzzle strip with the answer they found in the gray box. (end time, elapsed time, start time).
  5. Students will now solve the problem on the new strip, continuing in the same pattern until they reach the finish box.

This resource pack includes nine worksheets featuring different types of elapsed time problems. You will find problems that require students to

  • Determine the duration of time when given the start and end time
  • Determine start time when given duration and end time
  • Determine the end time when the start and duration are given.
