Halloween Math Activity Ideas
Are your students bouncing off the walls in excitement for Halloween? Here are some fun, yet educational math activity ideas to harness that energy!
- Spider Run: Place two small plastic spiders on a table. Two students use a straw to blow the spider as far as they can across the table. Then measure how far each spider was blown using either traditional or non-traditional units.
- Candy Corn Count: Give partners five pieces of candy corn. Partner 1 closes their eyes while Partner 2 takes some of the candy corn and hides it behind their back. Partner 1 opens their eyes and looks at how many candy corns have NOT been taken, and then tells their partner how many corns they believe were taken. Ten or twenty candy corns can be used to increase difficulty.
- Jack-O-Lantern Draw: Ask students to draw a circle on whiteboards to represent a pumpkin. Then give them directions to draw a Jack-o-Lantern face using shapes. For example, you might say, “Use two triangles for the eyes, one square for the nose, and a big circle for the mouth.” Students will review both shapes and practice following multistep directions.
