Ordering Numbers Vocabulary

There are many phrases that can be used to describe the same action or process when ordering numbers. Your students may encounter these different terms on tests, worksheets, or activities. Here is a handy guide to a few phrases your students may not be familiar with.

  • Ascending Order: Also called “least to greatest.” To “ascend” means to go up, climb, or rise, so this term means to put the numbers in order from smallest to largest.
  • Descending Order: Also called “greatest to least.” To “descend” means to move, climb, or fall downward. This means to put the numbers in order from largest to smallest.

Use these phrases interchangeably when teaching to ensure your students are familiar with them all!
